SAVE ENDANGERED BIRDS @ HAleakala National PArk

We have 2 endangered Bird friends in Haleakala National Park who will occasionally be found on the road. Most people expect a bird to fly away when they are on a road. These 2 endangered bird friends cannot get out of the way. The Nene our state bird and Ua’u a Hawaiian petrel seabird need our help. Recently both a Nene and a Ua’u were killed on the road. Over the years many have lost their lives, hit by cars on the road. The Ua’u is a black and white bird with a 3’ wingspan who fly’s during the night and would be found on the road at night. This seabird is designed for extended flight over the ocean. Their small feet are set behind the body mass making it difficult to waddle on land. It cannot get out of the way of a car. STOP, Brake and Save a Life. You could move it to the side of the road so the next car won’t hit it. There are only 2000 left on Haleakala and the loss of a single one is tragic. They only lay one egg a year. Our Beautiful Nene is a smaller, evolved version of a Canadian goose. Nearly extinct in the 1950’s this unique, only found in Hawaii bird has made a comeback. However, the Nene can be found on the road. It will not fly away. Stop, Brake and Save a LIFE. Wait until it slowly walks out of the road. Not just out of your lane but off the road. Protect it from other cars by warning people to stop. Flash your headlights for approaching cars. Drive the speed limit in the park which is 20 mph. No rush , enjoy the view. Mahalo
